Changes to downloading e-books

We offer a collection of over 16,000 e-books on the ProQuest Ebook Central platform and these can either be viewed online, or downloaded to a mobile device for access anywhere.

If you want to download an e-book, you’ll now need to install the Adobe Digital Editions app for Android or  iOS. This is a free app, but does require you to register for a free Adobe ID. You’ll also need your NHS OpenAthens account to download e-books to your device.

Our guide to downloading e-books gives more details and also explains how to access chapters of e-books on dedicated e-book readers.

Once you’ve got the app set up, you’ll be able to download our e-books to your mobile device for up to 14 days for offline reading. If you need them for longer, simply download them again.

If you already have the Bluefire Reader app installed, this will still work for now.

E-books on the go

Did you know that books from Shrewsbury and Telford Health Libraries’ collection of over 16,000 e-books can be downloaded to your mobile device for offline reading?

If you have an Apple or Android device, download the free Adobe Digital Editions app and create a free Adobe ID to log into it. Then access our e-book collection, login with NHS OpenAthens, find your book, and select ‘Download Book’.

You’ll be able to select the length of time you’d like to download the book for, up to 14 days, but if you need it for longer, you can simply ‘borrow’ it again after 14 days. Alternatively, if you just want a chapter, you can simply download a PDF of a single chapter which won’t expire.

Finding e-books is easy – simply select the e-book tab on OmniSearch.

Rapid e-book series for reference or revision

The ‘Rapid’ series of e-books are concise and easy-to-read, and ideal for reference or revision, covering the common scenarios that students or newly qualified staff might encounter.

They can be read online or downloaded to a mobile device for 24/7 access, and are available to library members via NHS OpenAthens.

You can access them on our virtual bookshelf, or you can search the whole collection of 20,000 e-books via OmniSearch.

Junior Doctor e-book collection

We’ve put together a virtual shelf of 34 key texts for junior doctors from Wiley and Open University Press publishers, to make it easier to access them.

These are just a handful of the 20,000 e-book titles we have made available to our users via NHS OpenAthens, all of which can either be read online, or downloaded for up to 14 days at a time to mobile devices.

Searching for e-books is very easy – simply visit the ‘E-Books’ tab on OmniSearch on our home page, type in some keywords and click search. Once you’ve entered your OpenAthens account details, you’ll see a list of what’s available and you can begin reading right away.
