By\u00a0Metcalfe R*, Bowen J**<br \/>\n*Final year medical student, Keele University Medical School.<br \/>\n**Consultant Neurologist, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS trust (SaTH).<br \/>\nWord Count: 232 words.<\/p>\n<p>Introduction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The overall incidence of brain tumours in the U.K. is around 7\/100,00<sup>1<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>To promote early diagnosis a fast track \u201c2 week wait\u201d pathway exists for prompt diagnosis\u00a0and initiation of management of brain\/CNS tumours<\/li>\n<li>In SaTH standardised suspected CNS malignancy referral proformas<sup>2<\/sup> are faxed to meet 2\u00a0week targets appointments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aim:<\/p>\n<p>To undertake an audit to address the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did referrals adhere to proforma criteria?<\/li>\n<li>What proportion was seen within two weeks?<\/li>\n<li>Is the process fit for purpose?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Methodology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Case note review of all patients referred via the two week CNS Cancer pathway over a sixth month\u00a0period from 1st July 2014 to 1st January 2015<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over the 6 months &gt;98 % (120\/122) referred via the two week wait pathway fulfilled the<br \/>\ncriteria on the proforma<\/li>\n<li>Only 5.7% (7\/122) were not seen within two weeks<\/li>\n<li>2 patients were diagnosed with brain metastases<\/li>\n<li>No patients were diagnosed with a primary brain tumour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conclusions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despite adherence of over 98% no case of primary brain tumour was detected over the six\u00a0month period and 2 (1.6%) of patients referred had brain metastases<\/li>\n<li>The current system is not effective at picking up brain tumours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Suggestions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These results will be shared with local primary care groups and the referral criteria refined<\/li>\n<li>A reaudit to assess impact of changes will be undertaken<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>References:<br \/>\n1.
