Building Confidence in Evidence-Based Practice

Getting started with the library
A tour of the library and IT facilities and an explanation of how to register and use the libraries.
Learning outcomes:
- Know about the library’s opening times and out of hours access procedure
- Be able to find where the different book collections are located, find a book on the shelves and borrow a book
- Be able to make use of the library’s wellbeing resources
- Know how to locate the library website for access to online knowledge resources, and register for an NHS OpenAthens account
Delivery: In-person for individuals or groups  
Duration: 10-15 minutes

Exploring NHS Knowledge Resources
An overview of the many online knowledge resources available, including books and e-books, article databases and point-of-care resources.
Learning outcomes:
- Know how to access the library website and use the search box
- Understand how to search for books and e-books, and reserve books for collection
- Understand how to do simple searches for journal articles using the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub and how to access full-text or request copies of articles
- Know how to access and use point-of-care resources such as UpToDate and BMJ Best Practice
- Know how to access library services such as article requests and evidence searches  
Delivery: This course can be delivered to individuals or groups and can delivered in-person or over MS Teams  
Duration: 30 minutes

Introduction to Health Literacy
The purpose of health literacy training is to empower individuals - patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public, to understand, access, and use health information effectively. This session will cover how health literacy has an impact on health inequalities and what healthcare professionals can do to help with both personal and organisational health literacy.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand & gain knowledge of what health literacy is and why it is important
- Recognise the importance of and ways to improve health literacy in their practice
- Understand and be able to apply techniques that empower individuals such as Teach Back and Chunk & Check
- Apply the principles of health literacy to written patient information  
Delivery: This course can be delivered to individuals or groups and can delivered in-person or over MS Teams  
Duration: 30 minutes – 90 minutes

Medical terminology
Medical words can seem unpronounceable and complicated but by learning how the words are made up, and what each component of the word means, we can begin to understand these terms better. This session will cover the components of medical words, using prefixes and suffixes, and the Greek and Latin origins of medical words.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand the Greek and Latin origins of common medical words
- Recognise how prefixes and suffixes modify the meaning of medical terms
- Apply basic word-building principles to interpret and construct medical terms
- Improve confidence in reading, pronouncing, and using medical terminology  
Delivery: This course is designed to be delivered to groups over MS Teams  
Duration: 60 minutes

Enhancing Evidence-Based Practice

Getting started with the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub
Learn how to use the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub to carry out searches for books or journal articles.  
Learning outcomes:
- Understand how to carry out simple searches in the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub
- Know how to filter results to type of material or publication date
- Understand how to either access the full text of articles or order copies
- Understand how to do more advanced searching using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and use the truncation operator  
Delivery: This course can be delivered to individuals or groups and can delivered in-person or over MS Teams  
Duration: 30 - 45 minutes

Finding Research Articles
Learn how to use the EBSCO or Ovid platforms to carry out evidence searches for journal articles across a range of databases.  
Learning outcomes:
- Know about search frameworks such as PICO and how to formulate a search strategy
- Know about the different databases available for searching
- Be able to carry out searches in one of the search platforms
- Identify the differences between thesaurus terms and free-text searching
- Understand how to use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
- Know how to use the truncation operator in free-text searching
- Apply filters such as publication year
- Be able to select individual references for export
- Know how to save and print off a search strategy  
Delivery: This course can be delivered to individuals or groups and is designed to be delivered in-person as a hands-on course. Attendees should have already created an NHS OpenAthens account for access to the databases.  
Duration: 45 - 60 minutes

Leading with Evidence

Advanced evidence searching
Learn how to use the EBSCO or Ovid platforms to carry out evidence searches for journal articles across a range of databases. This module will also look at advanced searching in the Cochrane Library.  
Learning outcomes:
- Apply search frameworks such as PICO and be able to formulate a search strategy
- Know about the different databases available for searching
- Be able to carry out searches in either EBSCO or Ovid, along with the Cochrane Library
- Recognise the different types of evidence available in the Cochrane Library
- Identify the differences between thesaurus terms and free-text searching
- Understand how to use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
- Know how to use the truncation and proximity operators in free-text searching
- Apply filters such as publication year Be able to select individual references for export
- Know about search filters (hedges) for different types of evidence
- Know how to save and print off a search strategy  
Delivery: This course can be delivered to individuals or groups and is designed to be delivered in-person as a hands-on course. Attendees should have already created an NHS OpenAthens account for access to the databases.  
Duration: 60 - 90 minutes

Assessing Research Quality
An introduction to the critical appraisal of published healthcare research and a practical exercise in appraising a piece of published qualitative or quantitative research (this can be chosen by the group).
Learning outcomes:
- Know about the evidence hierarchy
- Know where to locate critical appraisal checklists
- Understand the principles of critical appraisal
- Identify some of sources of bias in published research
- Be able to critically appraise a piece of published research  
Delivery: This course is designed for groups and can delivered in-person or over MS Teams.  
Duration: 1 - 2 hours  
SCONUL 7 Pillars of Information Literacy criteria: Evaluate  
Revalidation Reflective Reading workshops
This workshop can be used towards Nursing and Midwifery revalidation. Prior to the session you will be sent an article to read and a small checklist of points to consider when reading, this will earn you 1.5 hours of CPD time. When you attend the session the article will be discussed in a small group, reflecting on points whilst working through the checklist, this will earn you another 1.5 hours of CPD time.
Learning outcomes:
- Identify and analyse key themes
- Apply critical thinking strategies
- Recognise changes in understanding or perspective through discussion with others and collaborate with others
- Integrate insights from readings into professional practice
- Construct well-supported reflective pieces
Delivery: This course is designed for groups and can be delivered in-person or on MS Teams.  
Duration: 3 hours (1.5 hours self-directed learning in own time and 1.5 hours group reflection in the timetabled session)
